Flood Season Begins – Reminder of AVMA Family Resources
The spring flood season is upon us. Several of your states/territories have already experienced significant flooding. Much more will very likely be on the way in some areas of the country during the coming months.
We want you to know that the AVMA Family stands ready to assist your members in any way we can. Sending the following information to your members BEFORE an incident develops may help some to take proactive measures to be better prepared. For example, all veterinary practices should take this opportunity to review their need for flood insurance and also review the specifics of any existing coverage. Many practice owners erroneously believe that flood insurance is part of their normal business coverage.
Some AVMA Family resources that are available to your members include:
- AVMA maintains a Disaster Preparedness resource page that has extensive information about disaster preparedness and response that can benefit your members.
- AVMA is also developing a webinar series to assist practices in developing a Business Continuity of Operations Plan to become more resilient to unexpected interruptions in business operations. The first of these webinars can be found here.
- AVMF has grants for veterinarians who face emergency expenses, or who provide care for animals impacted by disasters. Specific information about these grants and streamlined application forms can be accessed at the AVMF Disaster Relief page.
- For any members who have AMVA PLIT coverage , they can contact AVMA PLIT at 800-228-7548, option 4 to speak with one of their insurance specialists who will answer questions and help secure coverage for flooding BEFORE something happens.
If you become aware of specific members who become impacted by a flood event (or any other disaster/emergency), please pass along their contact information and we will be happy to reach out to them individually to help them know of all AVMA Family resources. Please let us know if you have any further questions, or further information that may help us be more aware of situations as they develop.
P.S. If your VMA has a designated disaster contact individual, please send me that information and I will be pleased to communicate with them also.
