Maryland Gov closes non-essential businesses
Veterinarians qualify as a critical infrastructure business which may remain open in Maryland under the new guidance from Governor Hogan.
I want to highlight a few things for MDVMA members. One, Maryland has activated their medical reserves – veterinarians can sign up here: https://mdresponds.health.maryland.gov/
If layoffs or closures are imminent (even just for a short period of time). The Maryland Departments of Commerce and Labor are adjusting programming and availability to make sure businesses and employers are covered whether it’s through loans, grants, or easing up on unemployment insurance. https://govstatus.egov.com/md-coronavirus-business
Cases of covid-19 continue to increase across Maryland and in the DC/MD/VA region and Maryland has taken significant action to slow the infection rate of the virus, protect workers, and strengthen our health care system. Existing Executive Orders and statewide actions and recommendations can be found here: https://coronavirus.maryland.gov/
Today, Governor Hogan announced further action via executive order to stop the spread of the virus.
- All non-essential businesses, organizations, and facilities are closed as of 5:00 pm today.
- Critical infrastructure sectors identified by the federal government on Thursday remain open in Maryland. These include health care, pharmacies, grocery stores, law enforcement, energy sectors, and more. The full list can be found here: https://www.cisa.gov/critical-infrastructure-sectors
- The most recent announcement is not a direct “shelter in place” order but the existing directives previously issued by Governor Hogan need to be followed. “Unless you have an essential reason to leave your house, you need to stay in your home.”
- Governor Hogan also focused on state actions to help Maryland employees and employers impacted by covid-19. Maryland is setting aside millions to help small businesses continue operations and keep their employees on the payroll. Maryland has also strengthened their unemployment programs – unemployment can be filed for immediately. Finally, the Governor announced the creation incentives to manufacture of personal protective equipment to keep the health care industry safe in Maryland.
