Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine’s White Coat Ceremony
Submitted by Dr. Kelly Underwood

The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine’s White Coat Ceremony was held last year on August 23, 2019, at the Virginia Tech Moss Arts Center, to welcome the incoming class of 2023 to the college. This ceremony came after a week of orientation activities and served as an opportunity to welcome the new 127 students to both the school and the profession. MDVMA President, Elizabeth Cottrell, and College Committee Co-Chair, Kelly Underwood, attended this event on behalf of the MDVMA this year. The ceremony involved each first-year student receiving an official VMCVM laboratory coat. There were many smiles, laughs, and tears as students were coated by persons of their choice, including Dr. Gregory Daniel, VMCVM interim dean, family members, spouses, friends, and mentors. Students not only received an official laboratory coat during the ceremony but were also gifted with pins from the MDVMA and VVMA and a stethoscope donated by the CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets and the Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia Veterinary Medical Associations. The presidents from the MDVMA and VVMA and president-elect of the VMCVM Alumni Society also gave speeches, offering both congratulations and words of wisdom for the students as they begin their veterinary careers. In her speech, Dr. Cottrell reminded students that the MDVMA will be there for them as they begin their academic journey and after graduation. The ceremony closed with the incoming class reciting the Veterinary Student’s Oath led by Dr. Jacquelyn Pelzer, VMCVM Director of Admissions and Student Support.
